What is an NFT?

NFT stands for non-fungible token.

Non-fungible means the item is not interchangeable. An NFT is a unit of data stored in a digital ledger. Unlike Fungible tokens which are interchangeable, such as currency, one dollar can be exchanged for another dollar, each NFT is unique and has a distinct value with a certificate of authenticity and can therefore not be interchanged, as there is not another identical thing to interchange it with. This is why art and rare collectibles make perfect NFT’s.

NFT’s are created, sold, and bought via the blockchain. The creator becomes the owner of the original file and, consequently, of a set of authorizations regarding the use of this NFT. Most NFTs are registered on Ethereum's blockchain, a decentralized platform that supports the recording of unique information.

Setting up and getting started!

Artfundi Marketplace offers artists and galleries an easy way to get into the NFT market - with very little fuss. Artfundi Marketplace is one of the few NFT marketplaces that support Artist and Gallery commission splits allowing for both independent and represented artists.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Get a wallet:
Artists, galleries, and collectors will need to set up a wallet. For more information please view our Step-by-step Guides on how to set up a Torus Wallet or MetaMask Wallet.

Note: Artists and Galleries: The wallet account must belong to the artist, not the gallery, as the account will be registered as the creator of the work, and this sets up the artist as creator and begins the provenance. When the artist mints the work, the gallery commission may be specified as agreed per work. If there is no gallery involved then the artist leaves it at zero.

  2. Deposit:
Before you can transact on your wallet, you will need to purchase some ETH, Coinbase, Gemini or Luno are good places to start. You will then need to transfer your ETH to your wallet. Once your wallet is installed and topped up you’re now ready to go.

  3. How to Buy:
In order to buy NFT artworks from the Artfundi Marketplace you will still be required to set up a wallet with Ether in it. Once you have a wallet installed and running, navigate to the Browse tab and view the range of art NFT’s. You can filter by Artist, Gallery, Curator, Project or Search. When you find the work you wish to purchase, simply select the work and press the buy now button. Your wallet will prompt you with the transaction, you review, approve and then you’re done - you now own an NFT. Payment and delivery to your wallet takes place automatically.

Note: Ownership of an NFT may or may not grant you copyright. In fact, usually copyright remains with the artist, as it does with physical works. On the Artfundi Marketplace, we’ve made it clear - artists will specify whether or not copyright will be transferred to the buyer when the NFT is sold, and it will be stated below the selling price on the artwork detail page.

  4. Creating/Minting your first artwork (Artists and Galleries):
Minting a work is easy on Artfundi Marketplace, Once you have received confirmation from us that your application has been approved, you will have access to the ‘create’ tab. Click on the ‘create’ tab and drag and drop your artwork file (JPG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, or mp4 ) into the ‘create field’. It is recommended to use high-quality files, limited to 3GB, to avoid pixelation on large screens. Your NFT’s are then generated and stored on the IPFS (a decentralised multiple-server global storage network), and you receive the key. Once minted you can see your work on your Assets page, where you can set your selling price in ETH. You can sell your NFT’s on the Artfundi Marketplace, and/or embed your NFT's onto your own website or social media channels, have full promotion control, and sell from there with a link.

Note: Changes you make on the blockchain (such as setting the selling price, or burning/deleting the work) will require you to process the transaction via your wallet, and will incur gas fees. Other edits (such as changing the description of your work) are done on Artfundi Marketplace only and will ask you to sign off the change, but will not incur any fees.
